Mobile-enabled trail camera frequently asked questions
Please give me an overview about mobile networks and trail cameras
How much data will my camera use? / What plan should I get?
Short answer
This really depends on how many times your camera is triggered and how often your camera is programmed to send photos.
We recommend
We recommend getting a pre-paid plan for your first month. This will prevent you accidentially incurring a large mobile / data bill.
Long answer
Most mobile-enabled cameras can be programmed to send either:
- a daily summary (count) of the number of photos taken (least data usage)
- each photo as it is taken (and you can set a limit on how many photos to send per day; extra photos are still saved to the memory card, but not send) (medium usage, with risk for high usage)
- each photo as it is taken, without limit (risk of high usage).
Bear in mind that trail cameras are triggered by the movement of a temperature gradient across the field of view. This means that something warmer than the background environment, or cooler than the background environment, moves horizontally through the field of view.
On a hot day, if you have rocks or a road in your background, this will be a very warm backdrop for your image. If you have even just a blade of long grass in the foreground, and if that grass is significantly cooler than the rocks or road (for example, if it's in shade), and if the grass is swaying back and forth (for example, in a light breeze), then that grass will trigger your camera over and over. If your camera is configured to send every photo you will very quickly use up a lot of data on photos that are probably not useful.
